Roundabout or traffic lights? Tell county your opinion

Aug. 4, 2010 | 5 comments

The public will be able to give their opinions about plans to create a multiple-lane roundabout at Racine Avenue and Woods Road or put in traffic lights at the intersection during a public information meeting from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Aug. 4. The Waukesha County Department of Public Works will hold the meeting at the Muskego City Hall, S8200 Racine Ave.

No presentation will be made, but visitors can look at the plans for both options, ask questions and give opinions. More information is available from Michael Grulke, project manager, (262) 548-7740.

  1. Here we go again another silly decision being shoved upon us. Muskego take a stand! Isn't it funny that all of Muskego were NOT told about this meeting? Just more sneaky politics!! Put this on a referrendum and let us vote if we think this is an appropriate place to put this roundabout! These round abouts are getting ridiculous! Putting one in front of a High school is so hazardous! The intersection is fine with a little tweaking of adding some turn signals, walk signals and add some walk lanes for pedestrians. How are buses going to get through a roundabout quickly? How will kids walking to school, football games, etc.. get across the street with a roundabout that only yields to vehicles from the left.. not yielding to pedestrians? The time-sensored lights would make so much more sense for traffic flow, safety, cost and time to complete the project! Why would the county force the more-expensive choice onto us again when we don't want it?
  2. Don't place all of the blame on the County. They rely on extrensive input from local (in this case, City) officials.

It so happens that we have a Mayor who has repeated stated that he has 'spent alot of time on european roundabouts and really likes them'.

We also have a number of Aldemen who favor roundabouts (one of them supported 'up to 6 roundabouts' in a 2-block area as part of the Janesville Road improvement project--see minutes from "Mayor Johnon's Task Force on Economic Development).

I suggest that people contact both the County Supervisir and the City Mayor/Aldermen to express your opinions and request an ADEQUATELY PUBLICIZED PUBLIC HEARING on this matter prior to making decisions on the design of this proposed 'improvement' to Racine Ave.

For the record, I think that a roundabout in front of the Muskego High School is a VERY POOR CHOICE. Navigating a roundabout next to any large vehicle (semi, school bus, etc) is already a tricky proposition. Just look at the accident rate increase in the "I-43, Beloit Road and Moorland Road" intersection (get the statistics from the New Berlin Police Department, not DOT).

To put a roundabout in the area with the highest school bus volume in the City, plus inexperienced high school auto drivers is, to excuse the expression, "an accident waiting to happen".
  3. To suzi...

Just so you know.. the mayor is not for this... along with majority of the Muskego leaders.. Actually it is the county's decision, Muskego needs to stand up against this (if they are against it) I'm also not for the roundabout!
  4. The biggest issue we have is drivers not knowing how to use a roundabout, instead of meeting to point fingers and fight change we can make our roads better and safer by educating everyone on how to drive them. GO TO http://www.dot.state.wi.us/safety/motorist/roaddesign/roundabouts/av/roundabout.swf and check out how to drive a round about...even us "professional" drivers can learn a few things. THEY ARE SAFER, IT'S A FACT...and one at the high school would be perfect and money well spent!!!
  5. Prodriver-

It may cost less in the long run... yes...... However, the plan states $500,000 vrs 1 million(roundabout), for something we are not sure that'll work effectively.
