Lake park opponents gather signatures for petition

Jan. 27, 2012 | 4 comments

A direct legislation petition circulated by opponents of a lake park plan in Muskego may have enough signatures by next week to force a public referendum on whether the city should purchase two key properties.

The city is working to develop a park along Little Muskego Lake near Pioneer Drive and Janesville Road. Despite the fact that the Common Council this week authorized the city to purchase the properties for $3.5 million, opponents believe the plan, if brought before the public, would be defeated in a vote by Muskego residents.

"You need to let the people decide this," Lorie Oliver, petition drive organizer, said today.

Oliver said a concentrated effort will be launched this weekend involving a door-to-door campaign as well as a petition signing station, in a space that used to be a floral business in the 17000 block of West Janesville Road, both Saturday and Sunday.

"I'm very comfortable saying we'll have the signatures we need," she said.

As of Friday afternoon, park plan opponents had gathered nearly 1,000 signatures in since Jan. 20, Oliver said. They are shooting for 2,100 signatures.

There is a sense of urgency because the Common Council has started the ball rolling toward closings on the two properties, she said. "That's why we need to get this done," she said.

  1. What happened to the day when city officials elected to represent the people made decisions and if we didn't like those decisions, we didn't re-elect them? Now, if anyone every makes a decision and some people disagree, it's an immediate run for a recall or a petition to overturn it. It is getting ridiculous and I hope everyone who signs this petition is ashamed of themselves. Between $3 - 10 million to develop a park that enhances a city shamed by a tree farm downtown is a deal at any price point. How about beautfying the space, allowing access, and having a draw that brings people from this community and others to spend their time and money in Muskego? What a concept. Yet if you disagree you immediately shout "shame" and run for a petition, a recall, or a revote? Disgraceful. Politics in general today and the people of Muskego are again embarrassing themselves. A fight over a 4K program to enhace kids education? Eventually it passes and now doesn't seem so bad does it? A fight over new elementary schools - an embarrassment. A "Tree Farm" downtwown at Parkaland? An embarrassment. And now when city leaders dares beautify it's prized possession of its lakes (which sets us apart from New Berlin or Frankin) and some people don't like it they immediatlely fight. Mark my words, if a petition forces this to be a city vote and it still passes, these same individuals still won't be ok with that vote either and will scream for the Mayor's head in a recall. You know deep down I am right. Enough is enough. Quit wasting everyone's time and show some class Muskego. It's not about "sending this to the people to decide" it's about not getting your way on the playground and trying to take your ball home so no one else can have any fun. Stay classy Muskego, stay classy.
  2. "Politics is Lost" must either be the Developer, or someone who stands to gain finacialy from this waste or other peoples money. If it is such a great idea to develop this property, why not do it with private funds? I'm sure the four that voted in favor would be willing to cough up a few hundred thousand of their own money.
  3. The only thing I have to gain is a city that cares about it's future. How about allowing some GROWTH and development around here? Allow the city to attempt to make us a top-shelf community, not a backwoods embarrassment. P.S. I'm also someone who was mobbed by "signature gatherers" who were shocked that everyone they met didn't agree and immediately want to sign their petitions. They came to my door, they ran me down at a retail store parking lot (illegal), camped out in front of another store (harrassing comments to our family)... Quit embarrassing yourselves and our community and stop the mob mentality of recalls and petitions when you don't get your way!!!
  4. I know people are thinking about what is muskego's downtown? But really its a rural lake community and it doesn't have nor need a defined downtown. The use of 3.5 million /- for these houses isn't the best investment for the community. The money would be better spent on:
-developing Racine Ave to I-43 as the connection to the city (the development and revenue is endless for that connection). Bring water and sewer to encourage improvements (work with New Berlin)!!!
-Improve idle isle park. It's a nice park but it could be a great park!
-Focus on further development along the Moorland Road Corridor
