Tennis season opens with bang

Warriors edge out New Berlin Eisenhower for win at own quad

Aug. 17, 2010 | 0 comments

The deep Muskego girls tennis team got the 2010 fall season off to a solid start by winning its own quadrangular Saturday.

The Warriors were undefeated at five of eight flights to win the event with 21 points, four better than runner-up New Berlin Eisenhower.

First singles player Amy Upthagrove was one of the undefeated hosts with a 3-0 mark. She was joined in the unbeaten ranks by teammates Ana Spone at third singles, Nadia Tabbal at fourth singles, the third doubles team of Alison Lambrecht and Natalie Radloff and the fourth doubles team of Karly Larsen and Emily Kleist.

"I obviously have to be pleased with our win (Saturday)," Muskego coach Sue Vogel said. "Having success so early in the season is a confidence builder, especially to our younger players."

Vogel said she had 16 serious contenders for her varsity squad this season, the most she has ever had. When all the tryouts were completed and scores compiled, three new players earned varsity honors: Lambrecht, Radloff and Kleist.

"I am looking forward to this season," Vogel said. "Each year is so different, but I know I am going into the season with a solid lineup and a great group of girls."

Kristen Furry went 2-1 at second singles for the Warriors, as did their doubles teams of Michelle Roubik and Stephanie King (first doubles) and Kate Matusinec and Chelsea Kreutzer (second).

Eisenhower's first doubles team of Reina Maruko and Becky Dobrzynski was undefeated.
