Muskego sports wrapups

Tennis

The Warriors dominated the recent 16-team, two-day South Milwaukee/Oak Creek Invitational, losing only two matches at the tournament.

"It is always gratifying to win a 16-team tournament," Muskego coach Sue Vogel said. "To think that we only lost matches at two flights is very remarkable. Our veterans from last year really stepped up their game and our newcomers helped us add depth to the bottom of our lineup. I am looking forward to future competitions with these talented girls."

Muskego's Amy Upthagrove (first singles), Ana Spone (third) and Nadia Tabbal (fourth) were all undefeated with 4-0 records. At second doubles, Kate Matusinec and Chelsea Kreutzer were also 4-0, and at third doubles, two pairs - Alison Lambrecht/Natalie Radloff and Karly Larsen/Emily Kleist - both finished 2-0.

Kristin Furry (second singles) and the first doubles team of Michelle Roubik and Stephanie King were 3-1 for the Warriors, who defeated, Waterford, 6-1, in the championship after beating New Berlin West, Oak Creek and Whitnall.

Golf

The Warriors got the season off to a rocky start.

At the Oakwood Invitational on Aug. 19, Muskego placed sixth of eight teams with a 455, two days after the Warriors were nine of 12 teams at the Mukwonago Invitational at Rainbow Springs.

Muskego also lost its Southeast Conference opener to Franklin, 199-236, at South Hills on Aug. 16.

Soccer

The defending Division 1 state champions already have more losses in the first few weeks of 2010 than they did through all of 2009.

The Warriors opened the new campaign with a 2-1 loss at Brookfield East on Aug. 17 before going 1-1-1 at their own Muskego Cup Tournament Friday and Saturday.

A year ago, the Warriors won the WIAA Division 1 state tournament with a 27-1-1 record. They had not lost since Oct. 9, 2009, a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Homestead.

In their own tournament, Muskego opened with a 3-0 loss to Green Bay Preble, bounced back with a 9-0 win over St. Anthony (Minn.) and tied Menomonee Falls, 1-1, in the fifth-place match.
