The Vikings got their tournament season going in style by winning the 10-team West Allis Central Invite on Saturday.

West went 6-0, including a 21-8, 21-17 win over Plymouth in the championship match. The Vikings also beat Campbellsport, 21-15, 21-17, in the semifinals and swept pool-play matches against Milwaukee King, Plymouth, Delavan-Darien and Whitefish Bay.

In a total team effort, six different players led the Vikings in key statistical categories: Cayla Golsteyn in assists, Martha Radtke and Rebecca Gasper in kills, Casey Luehrs in aces, Kellie Shaw in digs and Gina Pezze in blocks.

The Warriors began this week still unbeaten after two weeks of competition.

Muskego won matches against Sussex Hamilton, Hartford and South Milwaukee at its own quadrangular Saturday and were undefeated at five flights: Amy Upthagrove at first singles, Kristen Furry at second, Nadia Tabbal at fourth, the team of Alison Lambrecht and Natalie Radloff at third doubles and Karly Larsen and Emily Kleist at fourth.

Muskego also won its first two duals of the season, including a 5-2 victory over visiting Franklin on Aug. 24, the Southeast Conference opener for both teams.

Furry pulled out a three-set, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 win over Franklin's Kat Donovan in the match of the day.

"Kristen does an incredible job of figuring out her opponent and adjusting to the circumstances," Muskego coach Sue Vogel said. "I don't know how she turns things around. Sometimes I think she just wills it with her mind."

Muskego's third doubles team of Lambrecht and Radloff also won in three sets. Upthagrove, Ana Spone and Tabbal won singles matches for the Warriors, who also defeated visiting Burlington, 4-3, the next afternoon.

Thanks to a sweep at doubles, the Lions managed a 4-3, nonconference victory at Slinger on Aug. 24.

The first and second doubles teams of Reina Maruko and Becky Dobrzynski and Anna Hahn and Andrea Ganske both improved to 8-1 on the season with victories. First singles player Lauren Slonac added a victory, as did the third doubles team of Molly Smith and Sara Brown as Eisenhower improved to 6-3 overall.

"As we head into conference matches, the strength of our squad lies in our double teams," Eisenhower coach Patrick Mead said. "Our doubles teams, all upperclassmen, will be counted on to lead us the rest of the season."

Junior Alli Bellford set a meet record by winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.97 seconds, took third in the 100 free in 55.50, and led off the second-place 400 free relay with Gina Lupo, Sam Rottel and Steffi Durley (3:59.59) as the Lions took fourth in the eight-team Fountainwood Funfest Aug. 21.

Durley, a freshman, took fourth in the 200 individual medley (2:24.91) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:04.87). Rottel and Lupo, both sophomores, took fifth in the 50 free (27.25) and sixth in the 500 free.

The Vikings continued their undefeated start to the season by beating two more nonconference opponents Aug. 24 and Friday.

In the most recent victory, a 3-1 home win over West Allis Hale, Charlie Duff and Bryan Franzen tallied first-half goals and Hlu Vang added one in the second. Matt Rink, Hlu Vang, Kevin Marx and Heng Vang registered assists as the Vikings improved to 4-0, as of Monday.

Two days earlier, Franzen snapped a scoreless tie with a goal in the second half as the Vikings defeated host Shoreland Lutheran, 1-0.

Three runners placing in the top six and two more with top-15 times allowed the Warriors to open the season with a solid victory at the six-team Shorewood Invite at Kern Park on Aug. 26.

The Drolshagens - Taylor and Niki - ran third and fourth for Muskego, in 16 minutes, 7 seconds and 16:08, respectively. Georgia Llanas was close behind in sixth in 16:28 to help the Warriors beat runner-up Whitnall by less than two minutes.

Amy Klaus contributed to Muskego's effort with an 11th-place time of 16:50 and Sonya Ponzi ran 14th in 17:03.

It's been a strong start to the Vikings' 2010 season.

West won its Woodland Conference opener, 6-1, over host Brown Deer on Aug. 26, before placing third at Saturday's six-team Grafton Invitational where Emily Young (second singles), Julia Raupp (third), Eilisha Manandhar/Nicole Tierney (second doubles) and Stephanie Schumacher/Lora Daskalska (third) all won multiple matches.

Young and the team of Manandhar and Tierney won three-set matches during a 5-2 nonconference loss at Menomonee Falls on Aug. 24.

The Vikings also place fourth of 16 teams at the South Milwaukee Invite Aug. 18-19.

The Vikings boys placed their top-five runners in the top-26 and took third at the season-opening, 12-team Palmyra-Eagle Invitational on Aug. 26.

Cross country newcomer Chase Robles led the boys with a 13th-place time of 18 minutes, 44 seconds, followed by James Kearn, who was 18th in 19:17.

For the Vikings girls, who are relatively inexperienced, newcomer Brittany Kozlowski had a stellar debut by placing third in 16:58, the only Viking in the top-30.

The Vikings are coached by high school counselor Jill Werner, who is in her first year as the varsity coach after coaching middle school cross country the past seven years. Erin Schwane is her assistant.

"Our hope is to help the program grow in numbers and in strength," Werner said. "Our current roster is a little shy of our goal of 30 athletes, but we do have talented and hard-working team members."

Sophomore Andrew Salo was second among his classmates as the Warriors opened the season at the Kenosha Tremper Invite, a grade-level meet at Lincoln Park, Saturday.

Salo finished in 18:12, nearly a minute better than his time of 19:06 from a year ago. Teammate Max Tesch (20:02) was the 13th-fastest sophomore.

Freshmen Caleb Berlyn (20:48) and Noah Golden (20:50) were seventh and eighth, respectively, senior Zac Hopp (18:35) was 10th and junior Joe Blommel (18:41) was 13th in their grade groups.

The Warriors measured up well against some of the area's best teams at the Al Gusho Tournament at Brookfield East, that is, with the exception of Marquette.

Muskego opened the two-day tournament with a 3-0 win over Homestead and closed with a 3-0 win over Arrowhead but lost a semifinal to eventual champion Marquette, 3-0, Saturday.

The Warriors also opened the Southeast Conference season with a 6-2 win over visiting Franklin on Aug. 24.

A late goal by Erik Hesselbach with an assist by Erik Ash forged a 2-2 tie for the Lions with visiting Mukwonago on Friday.

Eisenhower trailed, 2-1, until Hesselbach notched the tying goal in the 53rd minute for the Lions, who entered this week 1-2-2 overall.

Two days earlier, Eisenhower lost a heartbreaker to host Waukesha West, which scored the match's lone goal late in the second overtime.

"With just minutes left, there was a scramble in front of the goal," Eisenhower coach Gary Troy said. "The ball fell to an unmarked Wauwatosa West player who put it into the empty net. It was a shame to lose this one."

Eisenhower goal keeper Kadin Pasley made a key save off a penalty kick in the second half to force overtime.

Only a loss to Racine St. Catherine's in the championship match kept the Lions from winning the 12-team Hawk Invitational at Racine Prairie on Saturday.
