A blank for a blank

Muskego's next opponent knows about shutouts too

Sept. 6, 2010 | 0 comments

Muskego — Coach Ken Krause gave out plenty of praise to his defensive personnel after a 10-0 victory over Waterford in a non-conference football game on Friday night.

Krause, whose team improved to 2-0, cited defensive coordinator Jim Michlig, linebackers coach Rob Domenosky and defensive backs coach Dan Mlachnik for their game plan.

Helping execute that plan were Nick Schmidlkofer with two interceptions, linebacker Roland Dunlop with three sacks and Tommy Stark, Austin Wendlandt and Jordan Gruettner, who led in tackling.

Next opponent knows shutouts

They will need to duplicate that effort this Friday, as they welcome Franklin, which is 2-0 after a 21-0 triumph over Marquette last week.

The Sabers are led by senior quarterback Lance Baretz, who has a fine arm and can run as well, rambling for 114 yards and two touchdowns against the Hilltoppers. When Baretz does pass, his top targets are senior Brady Oates (three catches for 50 yards against Marquette), Evan Walton (two for 40) and Anthony Meyer. Senior Jesse Palok leads the running game.

Senior nose tackle Brenden Butler and senior linebacker Macon Plewa key the defense, which has yet to allow a point this season.

"Franklin is outstanding," Krause said. "We have to limit the big play, and on offense, we have to run some clock to keep them off the field."

One half of scoring

In the victory over Waterford, Muskego mustered a 65-yard drive in the opening quarter that was capped by a 22-yard scoring pass from quarterback Adam Schulz to Gruettner.

"Last week (in a victory over Port Washington), we (had success with) the belly sweep," Krause said, "but Waterford was jamming it. We used a play-action pass, and Adam made a good fake and threw downfield."

Brett Presnal added a 40-yard field goal in the second period.

Schulz completed 3-of-6 passes for 74 yards, and Luke Przybylka paced the ground attack with 34 carries for 115 yards.

"We had an intense weight-lifting program this year," Krause said, "and I think we are wearing teams down in the second half."
