Errors plague Warriors at state

Muskego ousted in state quarterfinal

Nov. 8, 2011 | 0 comments

Muskego - The inconsistency that plagued the Muskego girls volleyball team for the first part of this season made an unwelcome return in its quarterfinal match of the WIAA Division 1 State Tournament on Nov. 3.

The Warriors fell to Fond du Lac, 26-24, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, to see the season end. Fond du Lac went on to the state championship match - where Muskego had been in the past two seasons - before losing to Burlington.

"Fond du Lac is a good team," coach Karen Anderson said, "and we did what we had been doing all year long before the playoffs (which was to be inconsistent)."

Muskego held game point at 24-23 in the first game but had it taken away on a net call. In the second game, the Warriors were up 18-10 and 22-18 before losing.

They bounced back to win game three comfortably but then struggled in the fourth game.

"We had a complete lack of focus," Anderson said. "No one picked us up. It was just weird, because we had the momentum."

Anderson gave a simple explanation for the end of Muskego's tournament run.

"We scored our points and a lot of theirs," she said. "We had innumerable unforced errors in serve-reception and hitting. We would play great for a half game, then we didn't finish. Every time we did something right, we would shoot ourselves in the foot."

Chelsea Lallemont collected 17 digs for the match, while Jordan Wachowiak totaled 10 kills and Bianca Borga 23 assists.

Anderson said she was pleased with the season, in which the Warriors had ups and downs but still claimed the Southeast Conference championship.

"This group of girls came a long, long way from where they started," she said.

Seniors are Borga, Lallemont, Laura Felker, Lauren Foellings, Kaitlyn Hein and Lauren Karlik.
