New Berlin girls tennis
New Berlin Eisenhower seniors doubles team of Lauren Slonac/Becky Dobrzynski were selected as special qualifiers for this week's WIAA Girls Individual Tennis Tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison.
They will open the three-day tournament on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Their opponents will be Madison Memorial seniors Mykayla Johnson/Laura Xu (17-4).
Slonac/Dobrzynski qualified out of the sub-sectional at Brookfield East on Oct. 4 in Flight 1 doubles. They lost their first match, though, the Brookfield Central Sectional, so they had to rely on making it to state as special qualifiers.
Junior Hanna Muche of New Berlin Eisenhower - like her doubles teammates - made it to sectional in Flight 1 singles, but lost her first match at sectionals.
Eisenhower scored 10 points and New Berlin West scored four at the Brookfield East Sub-Sectional.
Eisenhower girls volleyball
The Lions won two matches last week and went undefeated in Woodland Conference (8-0) and claimed conference championship for the Black Division.
They opened the week by defeating New Berlin West in four games on Oct. 4. Jeni Heller and Carolyn Bogart led the team with 14 kills each. Allie Persick added 27 assists and three aces while Nina Dodd had 18 digs and Jeni Heller had five blocks.
"It was a hard-fought match, but we came out ahead of the in-town rivals," coach Mary Campbell said.
Two days later they swept Cudahy in three to finish undefeated in the Black Division.
Heller had nine kills, Persick added 19 assists, Rachel Dejno had five aces and Megan Maier had six digs.
The Lions also finished second at the Arrowhead invite last weekend, going 4-1 and losing to Arrowhead in the championship.
Muskego boys soccer
The Warriors put the finishing touches on another Southeast Conference championship with a 4-0 victory over Oak Creek on Oct. 4.
Josh DeGrave, Jared Pradarelli, Jimmy Grunert and Kyle Kryszak all scored as Muskego improved to 7-0 in the SEC and 47-1 since 2006.
Muskego also closed out the regular season with a 1-1 tie against Hartland Arrowhead on Oct. 6 behind a goal from Brian Bullard.
The Warriors (13-4-3) received the third seed in their WIAA Division 1 sectional and opened play against Waukesha North on Tuesday. If they won, they would take on either Mukwonago or Monona Grove on Thursday, Oct. 13, at home.
Muskego boys volleyball
In their high school careers, the Warriors' seniors had never beaten Franklin in a dual meet. Now they can cross that off their list.
The Warriors tipped the Sabers, 20-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-11, 15-10, on Sept. 3.
"Our seniors really stepped up," coach Joe Arbinger said. "They had a goal to beat Franklin. This was the first time I've seen us play with that kind of energy this year."
David Mlachnik tallied 21 kills, nine digs and three aces, while Sammy Pedersen posted 10 kills and four digs, Tony Fugarino 43 assists and five digs, Nick Mantsch 10 digs and AJ Pratt five blocks for Muskego, which improved to 3-1 in Southeast Conference duals.
Muskego girls swimming
Sami Pochowski won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 54.46 seconds and the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.66 to lead the Warriors to second place with 426 points in the Lancer Invitational at Brookfield Central on Oct. 4.
Taking second for Muskego were Emma Szczupakiewicz in the 100 butterfly (1:00.92) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.46), Szczupakiewicz, Pochowski, Megan Liebl and Kristen Kaiser in the 200 medley (1:51.97) and the 400 freestyle (3:46.25) and the 200 freestyle group of Jessica Pollack, Kari Balson, Sara Biro and Claire Borland (1:46.63).
Finishing third were Kaiser in the 200 individual medley (2:18.7) and the 500 freestyle (5:23.24) and Liebl in the 100 butterfly (1:01.82).
The Warriors also routed Racine Case, 145½ points to 40½, on Oct. 6 to move to 5-0 in Southeast Conference duals. Kaiser won the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, while Pochowski claimed the 200 IM and 100 backstroke. Other winners were Claire Borland in the 200 freestyle, Biro in the 50 freestyle, Hope Borland in the 100 butterfly and Szczupakiewicz in the 500 freestyle, along with all three relay teams.
New Berlin West football
New Berlin West dropped a 46-13 decision to Brown Deer on Friday at West as the Vikings trailed 33-0 at halftime and never recovered.
The Vikings are 2-5 in the Blue Division of the Woodland Conference and close out the year at Greenfield (4-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.
The second-place Falcons (5-2) led 46-0 before the Vikings finally got on the board in the fourth period.
Brown Deer quarterback Jake Schimenz accounted for six scores - two rushing touchdowns and threw four touchdown passes. Wide receiver Tray Palmer caught three scores (50, 10, 25).
Schimenz completed 16 of 20 passes for 246 yards and Palmer grabbed 6 catches for 132 yards (22.0).
West sophomore running back Bryan Watson, who scored on a 3-yard run to get the Vikings on the board, rushed for 154 yards in 17 carries, a 9.1 average. Quarterback Preston Porter closed out the scoring with a 3-yard run, rushed for 71 yards on 16 carries (4.4).
West boys soccer
The New Berlin West boys ended an excellent regular season by splitting two games and finishing with an overall record of 11-7-3, including a Woodland Conference record of 8-2-1.
"I am very proud of my team for battling back after a 0-5-2 start to the season, and now finishing second in the Woodland Conference," Vikings coach Ryan Otten said. "We have set ourselves up well for the tournament, as we are finally playing some pretty good soccer going 11-2-1 in our last 14 games. Our first goal was not attained, but we know there are bigger prizes still to be won."
The Vikings hosted Whitewater on Tuesday. With a win, they would host Delavan-Darien or Milwaukee Lutheran on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
West beat the Falcons (6-5) at Whitnall, 5-1, on Oct. 3 to open the week.
Kevin Marx found Brock Shilling with a pass in the 12th minute, and Brock slotted the ball home for the first goal of the game. Ten minutes later Marx finished out the second goal of the half.
David Franke scored in the 46th minute off an assist from Shilling and, in the 66th minute, off of a free kick that he bent over the well. In the middle, Marx finished off a goal in the 54th minute off an assist from Matt Rink.
The Vikings dropped a 2-1 overtime decision at third-ranked Pewaukee, losing their chance to repeat as conference champions.
The Pirates scored in the 32nd minute off a corner kick with a goal that was put away by Austin Klemm. The Vikings tied the game two minutes into the game off a short corner from Marx to Max Harty, who then played it back to Marx, who served into the far post for a Rink goal.
The Pirates scored on a header two minutes into overtime.
Muskego girls volleyball
The Warriors won a pair of Southeast Conference duals last week, beating Kenosha Bradford, 13-25, 25-13, 25-23, 25-20, on Oct. 6 and Racine Case, 25-9, 25-22, 25-23, on Oct. 4.
Against the Red Devils, Chelsea Lallemont posted 12 digs, Jordan Wachowiak seven blocks, Mary O'Connor 12 kills and Bianca Borga 21 assists and five aces.
In the Case dual, Lallemont totaled 16 digs, O'Connor seven kills and four blocks, Borga 13 assists and Kaitlyn Hein seven kills for the Warriors (5-1 in the SEC going into this week).
West girls swimming
New Berlin West topped St. Thomas More/St. Francis, 134-49, on Oct. 5, sweeping five events.
Madison Tew swept both the 50-yard freestyle (25.51) and 100 free (55.44) with Amber Kazinski taking second in both (27.70) and (1:02.72), followed by Kayla Rasmussen in the 50 (28.51) and Jenny Graham in the 100 (1:04.60).
Graham finished first in the 200 free (2:22.00) with Maggie Kellermann in second (2:29.32) and Abby Jaquish in third (2:32.17). Divers Savannah Heitman (153.45 points), Kelsey Dickinson (152.7) and Melissa Vanselow (111.3) went 1-2-3.
The 200 free relay teams took first and second with Graham, Rasmussen, Chloe Banholzer and Kazinski (1:54.95) and Kellermann, Gina Bednarek, Lauren Kritter and Jaquish (2:03.13), respectively.
Also capturing first place were Lindsey Rodenkirk in the 100 back (1:04.34), 200 medley relay with Kritter, Emily Szydlowski and Tew (2:00.48) and the 400 free relay with Tew, Szydlowski and Banholzer (4:01.14). Molly Wannamaker won the 500 free (6:23.29).
In second were Rodenkirk in the 200 IM (2:22.55) and Kritter in the 100 breast (1:25.09). Earning third place were Szydlowski in the 200 IM (2:27.70), Banholzer in the 100 butterfly (1:11.70), Bednarek in the 100 back (1:18.51), and Rayna Matthews in both the 500 free (7:04.07) and the 100 breast (1:27.62).
Also in third were the 200 medley relay team of Kellermann, Jenny Mathias, Wannamaker and Bednarek (2:18.46) and the 400 free relay of Rasmussen, Wannamaker, Graham and Kazinski (4:17.87).
Muskego girls cross country
The Warriors tallied 397 points for 14th place in the Wisconsin Lutheran Invitational on Friday at McCarty Park.
Lexie Trimble placed 56th in 16 minutes, 48 seconds, followed by Holly Bandoszeski in 69th (16:57), Alyssa Jansen 76th (17:04), Abby Wichgers 94th (17:27), Madison Francis 102nd (17:41), Julie Petak 109th (17:48), Kayla Kakonis 114th (17:56) and Amy Rothwell 125th (18:31).
Eisenhower cross country
The boys and girls cross country teams finished seventh in the Port Washington Invitational on Oct. 6 at Tendick Park.
The boys placed seventh (180) behind Brookfield East (39).
Matt Kizaric finished 15th to lead the Lions (17:45) and earned a medal, followed by Dallas Thompson (31st, 18:17), Stephen Acuri (35th, 18:27), Brian Schaefer (42nd, 18:41) and Kevin Plazak (57th, 19:05).
Brandon Wing (62nd, 19:18) and Eric Deutsch (75th, 20:19) were the other runners.
The girls were seventh out of 16, scoring 173 points behind first-place Slinger (81).
Therese Thompson and Rebecca Eldien finished 12th (16:02) and 13th (16:50), respectively. Thompson ran a season-best and earned a medal along with Eldien. Hannah Kitzer (34th, season-best 16:50), Carley Ney (49th, 17:10) and Veronica Diedrich (65th, 17:42) were the top-five Ike runners.
Holly Plazak (86th, season-best 18:25) and Bettina Diedrich (88th, 18:34) also participated.
Muskego girls golf
The Warriors fired solid scores in a WIAA Division 1 sectional on Oct. 4 at Bristol Oaks Country Club, but not good enough to qualify for the state meet.
Sophomore Chelsey Witkowiak shot an 86 to tie for 13th place individually and miss qualifying for state by four shots.
"She was averaging 99 this year, and that was a personal best," coach Robert Radtke said.
Senior Allie Bolskar carded 98, sophomore Hannah Brown 100, senior Ariana Czaplewski 108 and sophomore Rachel Lensing was disqualified.
"Everybody played unbelievably well," said Radtke, whose team totaled 392 for sixth place. "All of them equaled or were close to their personal-best scores."
Eisenhower soccer
The Lions split two Woodland Conference games last week, losing at Tosa West, 4-1, on Oct. 3 to open the week and then blanking Greenfield, 5-0, on Oct. 5 to end it.
Ike is now 6-11-4 overall and 5-5-4 in conference action, seventh out of 12 teams.
In the win over the Hustlin' Hawks, Eisenhower took a 2-0 lead in the first half, as Jeremy Blackbourn scored at 7 minutes with an assist by Ross Riopelle, and Noah Wagner scored at 20 minutes with an assist by Steve Evans.
Evans scored 13 minutes into the second half, aided by Riopelle's second assist.
But the Lions weren't done. Blake Duffin scored unassisted three minutes later and then he assisted on Eric Hesselbach's goal in the 75th minute.
"We finished the regular season in a dominating fashion," coach Gary Troy said. "Our defense was led by Lukas Wolter in goal and Andrew Swiecichowski."
New Berlin golf
Bailey Meyer, the only New Berlin golfer to advance out of the regional on Sept. 29, shot an 84 at the WIAA Sectional at Kenosha Tremper.
She just missed qualifying for state by two strokes, tying for seventh.
West cross country
The New Berlin West boys finished second and the girls eighth of 13 teams in the Shorewood Invitational on Oct. 6 at Kern Park.
The Vikings scored 83 points to finished behind the Shorewood boys (31).
"This gave us a good feeling heading into the conference meet that we will be pushing for our early season goal of top two in conference," coach Jill Werner said.
Chase Robles (11th, 17:28), James Kearn (13th, 17:32) and Momo Mohamed (16th, 17:34) finished in the top 16. Not far behind were Cory Davis (21st, 17:53) and Patrick Delaney (22nd, 17:55).
Mitch Groth was 30th (18:08) and Jack Wannamaker (47th, 18:55) also participated.
Shorewood won the girls side (52 points) while the Vikings finished eighth (190 points).
Brittany Kozlowski finished 19th (16:53), followed by Angie Heller, who took 35th, with a personal record of 17:19. Rachel Butler was 41st (17:36), Katherine Daigle, 44th (17:42) and Erin Simpson, 51st (17:45).
Kassidy Berens took 53rd (17:48) and Haley Robles, 61st (18:27).
New Berlin boys volleyball
The New Berlin United went 2-0 last week, defeating Greendale on Oct. 3 and Shorewood on Oct. 5.
By handing the Greyhounds their first Woodland Conference loss, the United moved into a first-place tie at 5-1.
The United swept the Panthers (25-21, 25-16, 25-22) to open the week. Nick Olson (14 kills), Steve Zeske (33 assists), Phil Batzner (nine digs) and Mickey Sugar (three aces) were the stat leaders.
It took New Berlin four games (25-22, 18-25, 25-14, 25-21) to beat Shorewood two days later. Stat leaders were Olson (23 kills), Zeske (47 assists) and Batzner (13 digs).
West girls volleyball
The New Berlin West girls volleyball team went 1-1 last week, losing to New Berlin Eisenhower and defeating Whitnall in Woodland Conference matches.
Eisenhower defeated West (16-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-23) in a hard-fought battle on Oct. 4.
"This was a back and forth match in which neither team could separate themselves from the other," West coach Joel Golsteyn said. "This was the best-played match of our season. The quality of play for both teams was outstanding."
West was led by sophomore Gina Pezze, who tallied 18 kills, four blocks and 18 digs. Junior Kellie Shaw also had 18 digs for West and sophomore Sarah Franzen dished out 32 assists.
Two days later at Whitnall, the Vikings won (25-10, 25-19, 23-25, 25-21).
The Vikings (8-1 in the Woodland and 24-4 overall) received kills from Pezze (18), Rebecca Gasper (12) and Casey Luehrs (10). Franzen had another big night, handing out 42 assists. Shaw had 16 digs and Gasper had four blocks.
Eisenhower girls swimming
The Lions had some good performances at the Cedarburg Invitational on Saturday. (Team scores were not available at deadline.)
Ike senior Alli Bellford won the 50-yard freestyle (24.89) and the 100 free (54.89) and finished fifth in 500 free (5:38.51) to lead the way.
Freshman Nicole Bellford was second in the 100 butterfly (1:03.46) and junior Sam Rottel took third in the 50 free (25.64) and fourth in the 100 free (55.68).
Two relay teams also did well. The 400 free relay of Rottel, Nicole Bellford, Gina Lupo and Alli Bellford finished second (3:53.91), and the 200 free relay of Rottel, Nicole Bellford, Maddie Peterson and Alli Bellford took third (1:46.11).
