Muskego - Talk about following instructions to the letter.
Muskego girls basketball coach Brian Hirtz had been telling his players to focus on defense, and they responded by holding Racine Horlick to one point - yes, one point - in a 55-1 victory on Friday night.
"I've been harping about playing on the defensive end and holding teams down," Hirtz said. "I guess they took it to heart."
Even more incredibly, the Warriors nearly pitched a shutout. The Rebels were held scoreless for most of four quarters before Chy'enne LeNeair hit one of two free throws with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining in the game.
"I've never been a part of anything like that," admitted Hirtz, whose team played mostly man defense with a bit of 1-3-1 zone mixed in as well. "We played well overall, and they really struggled."
Muskego, which improved to 2-1 overall, tallied 22 points in the opening quarter and was up 37-0 at the half and 51-0 after three periods.
Jessica Cattani, Renee Bennett, Jessica Mlachnik and Shannon Riley each tallied eight points as the Warriors had nine girls score between four to eight points.
"The girls are buying into what we're doing," Hirtz continued. "They are carrying over the things we work on in practice."
Muskego welcomes Racine Park at 7:15 p.m. Friday and will visit former Southeast Conference foe Burlington at 7 p.m. Dec. 22.
