Warriors' Barr set for state CC meet

Muskego boys claim fifth in cross country sectional

Oct. 24, 2011 | 0 comments

Muskego - Leanna Barr of Muskego will finish her freshman season in cross country on the biggest stage available.

Barr qualified for this weekend's WIAA Division 1 State Meet by finishing ninth in 15 minutes, 59.69 seconds at a sectional meet on Saturday at Greenfield Park. She was the fifth individual qualifier, edging the 12th-place finisher, Jasmine Van Tine of Whitnall, by one second for the final spot.

Barr will compete in the meet at 12:20 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

She also helped lead the Warriors to fourth place as a team with 110 points in the sectional, which was won by Brookfield Central with 50 points.

Georgi Llanas ran 14th (16:06), Sonya Ponzi 20th (16:24), Abby Wichgers 22nd (16:27), Lexie Tremble 45th (17:06), Amy Klaus 46th (17:07) and Holly Bandoszeski 50th (17:13). Wichgers is the lone senior of that group.

Coach Richard Raney was unavailable for comment this week.

The Muskego boys team finished fifth with 135 points. Andrew Salo led the way with 19th (17:07), while Sebastian Miller took 24th (17:21), Adam Joerres 25th (17:22), Nick Leonard 29th (17:24), Joe Blommel 38th (17:36), Alex Kocher 60th (18:27) and Joe Egan 64th (18:53).

"We were underdogs going in, and we finished right about where I thought," coach C.J. Michaud said. "I thought we would be between third and fifth. We were in eighth place at the mile mark and moved up to fifth."

Michaud appreciated the Warriors' effort during 2011.

"This was a terrific season," he said. "This was the most dedicated and easy to coach team that I've ever had."
